Ballet Through Borders 2023

The 2023 Ballet Through Borders project marked our first year of programming and the beginning of a vision brought to life. We hosted our first week-long ballet camp in South Africa, welcoming 18 young dancers. Throughout the week, the girls trained daily, learned choreography, and prepared for a final performance. For many, it was their first time receiving proper ballet supplies—shoes, tights, leotards, skirts, and sweaters—helping them feel confident in class. Each dancer also received a custom floral skirt made by a local seamstress.

Beyond the studio, the girls shared meals and built strong friendships and community. The 2023 princess theme was Snow White, with dancers performing as birds, bunnies, mice, and foxes. Costumes were a collaborative effort—borrowed from June Taylor School of Dance (Oregon, USA) and Francien de Kock Dance School (South Africa), along with handmade pieces.

A local school generously provided its theater, where over 100 community members attended the performance. That year also included the first South African cultural fundraising night, raising about $1,800, and local press coverage that helped share the project’s impact. Following the camp, select dancers received yearlong scholarships to continue their training—highlighting the growing need and excitement within the community.
